The short answer
If you can run a cable to the device you watch on, do it. Not because Wi-Fi is slow — most modern Wi-Fi is far faster than a television stream needs — but because live IPTV cares about consistency far more than it cares about peak speed.
If a cable is impractical, Wi-Fi is perfectly usable. Most of the buffering blamed on Wi-Fi comes from a handful of fixable causes rather than from wireless itself.
Why live TV is harder on Wi-Fi than Netflix is
On-demand services download well ahead of what you are watching. If the connection stumbles for two seconds, there is already a minute of video waiting, and you never notice.
A live stream cannot do that. It is arriving as it is being broadcast, so the buffer is small by design. A brief interruption that an on-demand app would absorb silently becomes a visible stall on a live channel.
That is why people are often surprised that Netflix is flawless while a live sports channel stutters on the same connection. What actually goes wrong on Wi-Fi
Three things, in roughly this order of likelihood:
- Interference and congestion. Neighbouring networks, and every other device in your home, share the air. The 2.4 GHz band in a flat is often crowded.
- Distance and walls. Signal strength falls quickly through masonry. A television on the far side of the house from the router is a common culprit.
- Brief dropouts. A momentary loss that never registers as the internet "going down" is still long enough to interrupt a live stream.
None of these are fixed by paying for a faster broadband package, which is why upgrading the tariff so often changes nothing.
When Wi-Fi is genuinely fine
Plenty of setups run happily on wireless. Wi-Fi is usually not your problem when the device is in the same room as the router or one wall away, when it is on the 5 GHz band, and when the household is not simultaneously doing something heavy like large uploads.
If your picture is stable and only occasionally stutters at peak times, the connection type is probably not the thing to change first. Work through the buffering guide instead — it diagnoses by symptom.
How to hardwire each kind of device
Not every device has an Ethernet port, and the workaround differs.
Smart TVs
Almost all Samsung and LG televisions have an Ethernet port on the back. Plug in, then set the network to wired in the TV's network settings — some sets keep using Wi-Fi until you tell them not to. Device-specific notes are on our IPTV for Smart TV page.
Firestick and other HDMI sticks
A Firestick has no Ethernet port. Amazon sells a powered Ethernet adapter that replaces the USB power lead, and third-party equivalents exist. This is the single most effective upgrade for a stick that buffers.
Android TV boxes
Most boxes, as opposed to dongles, have an Ethernet port already. This is one of the reasons a box tends to be steadier than a stick.
Apple TV
The Apple TV 4K has an Ethernet port on some models and not others, depending on the generation and storage tier. Check the back of the unit before buying a cable.
Laptops and desktops
Use the port if the machine has one, or a USB-C or USB-A adapter if it does not.
The middle ground: powerline and mesh
If running a cable through the house is not realistic, two options sit between wired and wireless.
Powerline adapters send network traffic over your mains wiring. Results vary with the age and layout of the circuit, and they work best when both adapters are on the same ring. When they work, they are close to a cable.
A mesh node near the television, ideally one with an Ethernet port, gives the TV a short wireless hop to a strong access point instead of a long one to a distant router.
If you are staying on Wi-Fi
A few changes make a real difference:
- Connect to the 5 GHz network rather than 2.4 GHz where the device supports it.
- Move the router out of a cupboard and away from the floor.
- Keep it clear of microwaves, cordless phone bases and large metal objects.
- Restart the router occasionally — some units degrade over long uptimes.

What a cable will not fix
Worth being clear about, because a wired connection is sometimes treated as a cure-all and then disappoints.
Ethernet fixes delivery between your router and your device. It does nothing at all about what happens before that. If a channel is broadcast at a low bitrate, the picture will look exactly the same over a cable — that is decided at the source, as our guide on why a picture looks soft explains. If your broadband itself is congested at peak, a cable does not create capacity that is not arriving.
It also does nothing for a device that is simply struggling. A stick short of memory, or one that cannot decode a newer codec in hardware, will stutter on the steadiest connection in the world — our guide on H.264 and H.265 covers that case.

Mesh systems, and the backhaul question
Mesh has become the default answer to poor coverage, and it is a good one — with a caveat that decides whether it helps streaming.
The link between mesh nodes is called the backhaul. Where that link is wireless, the node is using the same airtime to talk to your device and to talk back to the main unit, which can roughly halve usable throughput and adds a second hop of variability. For a live stream, that variability matters more than the raw figure.
Where the backhaul is wired — nodes connected to each other by cable — a mesh behaves very differently and is genuinely excellent. Some systems also reserve a dedicated radio for the backhaul, which is the next best thing.
So the practical guidance is: put the television on the node nearest to it, prefer a wired or dedicated backhaul if you are buying, and remember that a mesh solves coverage rather than congestion. If the household is saturating the line in the evening, more nodes will not change that.
Checking whether the cable actually helped
Run the comparison properly rather than trusting an impression formed in the first two minutes.
- Note the symptom precisely first — stalls per hour, or the times of day it happens
- Test the same channel, at the same time of day, before and after
- Watch for several minutes rather than seconds, since buffers take time to run dry
- Check the speed at the device on both connections, not at the router
- Change only the connection, leaving player settings alone for the test
