First, work out what kind of buffering it is
Do this before changing anything. It narrows the cause dramatically.

If a single channel misbehaves while everything else is smooth, stop troubleshooting your house — that is the source, and the useful action is to tell us so we can look at it.
Fix 1 — Wi-Fi, which is the cause more often than anything else
Streaming sticks and Smart TVs sit behind the television, frequently against a wall and sometimes inside a cabinet. That is close to the worst possible position for a radio receiver, and it is the single most common reason IPTV buffers.
- Use the 5 GHz band rather than 2.4 GHz if your router offers both. It is faster and far less congested, though its range is shorter.
- Move the device out from behind the screen. An HDMI extender cable costs very little and can transform a Firestick's reception.
- Check what else is on the network. A large download or a game console updating will take priority over your television.
- Restart the router if it has been running for months. Genuinely worth doing once.
Fix 2 — Use a cable if you possibly can
If the television is within reach of the router, an Ethernet cable will do more for playback than every software setting combined. It removes interference, congestion and range from the equation entirely.
Where a cable is impractical, powerline adapters — which carry the network over your existing electrical wiring — are usually the next best option and considerably better than distant Wi-Fi. Most streaming sticks accept a small Ethernet adapter that plugs into the power port.
This matters most for live sport, where fast motion carries more data and a marginal connection shows up immediately.
Fix 3 — Check you actually have the bandwidth
Run a speed test on the device that is buffering, not on your phone standing next to the router. The number that matters is what reaches the television.
- Below 10 Mbps — expect buffering on HD. This is the problem.
- 15 Mbps — comfortable for HD.
- 25 Mbps or more — comfortable for 4K.

Fix 4 — Give the device some room
Streaming sticks are small computers with very little memory, and they slow down when starved.
- Force-stop background apps rather than just returning to the home screen.
- Clear the player's cache in the app settings, or in the device's app settings.
- Free up storage. Delete installer files and apps you no longer use.
- Restart the device properly — a full power cycle, not standby.
- Watch for heat. A stick sealed into a recess behind a wall-mounted television will throttle itself. This is the usual explanation when playback is fine for ten minutes and then degrades.
Fix 5 — Adjust the player, and pick the right stream
Two adjustments genuinely help, and one is often overlooked.
Increase the buffer size if your player offers the setting. A slightly longer delay before playback starts gives the app more room to absorb a dip. For live sport this is almost always a good trade.
Pick the right version of the channel. Where a channel is listed in both HD and SD, or in both 4K and HD, choosing the lower one when your connection is marginal is far better than watching a stuttering higher one. And if your television is not 4K, a 4K stream buys you nothing while costing bandwidth.
When it is genuinely not you
If you have worked through the above and the pattern is "everything buffers, on a wired connection, at a good speed, on more than one device", then the fault is not in your house. That is the point to message us with what you have already tried, so we can check from our side rather than repeating the same steps.

Buffering that only happens in the evening
This deserves its own answer, because it is the most reported pattern and the one people most often misdiagnose as a fault with the service.
If a stream is flawless in the afternoon and unwatchable between roughly seven and eleven at night, the cause is congestion rather than capability. Nothing about your device or your subscription changed between four o’clock and nine. What changed is how many people are sharing a path with you.
There are three separate places that contention can happen, and they need different answers. On your local access network, cable and some fibre technologies share capacity between nearby homes, so your neighbours’ evening viewing genuinely affects yours. And beyond that, congestion can occur between your provider and the source.
Confirming which is straightforward. Run a speed test on the failing device at four in the afternoon, then again at nine in the evening. A large drop points at your line or your local network rather than at the service. What actually helps at peak, and what does not
- A wired connection — it removes your own household from the equation entirely
- A larger player buffer, which absorbs short dips at the cost of a slower channel change
- A lower-bitrate entry for the same channel while the congestion lasts
- Pausing large downloads, backups and console updates for the evening
- Moving the heaviest household use off the same band as the television
What generally does not help is buying a faster broadband package. If your line delivers 200 Mbps at four o’clock and 30 Mbps at nine, upgrading raises the first number and does very little to the second, because the constraint is shared capacity rather than your subscription tier. Where in the playback the buffering happens
The moment it occurs is diagnostic, and it is worth noticing before you change anything.
Buffering only when you change channel, which then settles, is normal behaviour rather than a fault. The player is filling an empty buffer from scratch, and on a large list it may also be fetching guide data at the same time. Our guide on why changing channels feels slow covers what is happening.
Buffering that appears after several minutes of clean playback points at the device rather than the network — memory pressure or heat, both covered above. Buffering that arrives in a regular rhythm, every minute or two, usually means the stream is arriving slightly slower than it is being consumed, so the buffer drains and refills. That is a bandwidth or congestion problem.
Buffering that coincides with something else starting in the house is contention, and the culprit is usually findable in under a minute.
Two causes people rarely check
Both are common enough to be worth ruling out before anything more involved.
The first is another device on your own subscription. If your plan permits one stream at a time, a second player left open elsewhere in the house — including one that is paused or simply backgrounded on a phone — can produce repeated stalling that looks exactly like a network fault. The second is the specific entry you are watching. Where a channel appears several times in the list, those entries frequently come from different sources with different bitrates, and one can be markedly steadier than another at the same moment. Why does my IPTV keep buffering?
Most often the local network rather than the service — typically weak Wi-Fi reaching a device sitting behind the television. Other common causes are insufficient bandwidth at the device, background apps and low memory, or an overheating streaming stick.
Does a VPN cause IPTV buffering?
It can. A VPN routes traffic through an extra server, which adds latency and often reduces throughput. If you use one, test with it switched off to see whether it is contributing.
